Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5 Georgetown and DePaul Play to Scoreless Tie

WASHINGTON –  The No. 5 Georgetown University men's soccer team was given extra minutes but could not find an answer as the squad played to a 0-0 double overtime tie against the DePaul University Blue Demons on Friday at Wish Field in Chicago, Ill. in BIG EAST Conference action.  With the draw, the Hoyas moved to 7-1-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while DePaul went to 4-5-2 on the year and 0-1-2 in league games.

Sounds of the Game
  • "You have to give a lot of credit to DePaul, they're very organized and very committed but we still generated 24 shots and 15 corners which is a good volume of opportunities on the road.  We knew finding the first one was going to be the trick today and we lacked quality end products on our finishing.  I can't fault our guys though because the effort was there and the guys played hard but it's difficult to break down a disciplined opponent.  We'll take some positives away but overall things just didn't fall our way." - Head Coach Brian Wiese
How it Happened
  • In the 36th minute, junior Derek Dodson had a chance at the goal resulting in keeper Drew Nuelle's first save on the afternoon.
  • Nuelle then saved a shot from Paul Rothrock before Riley Strassner's chance went just right of the goal.
  • The Hoyas dominated pace in the first half as well as possession with seven corner kicks to DePaul's one.
  • Early in the second half, freshman Dante Polvara had a shot sail high.
  • The squads then traded shots and saves as DePaul's best chance of the afternoon was saved by freshman keeper Tomas Romero.
  • With 14 minutes left in regulation, Achara and Dodson combined for an opportunity as Nuelle continued to shut out the Blue & Gray.
  • Polvara had one more shot sail high as the game went into overtime in a scoreless tie.
  • In the 91st minute, Rothrock sent one across the face of the goal, but it was pushed out of harm's way by Nuelle with the Hoyas on the attack.
  • A setpiece allowed Nealis a golden opportunity which Nuelle again stopped.
  • Georgetown was on offense almost the entire second overtime, but could not find the back of the net.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot DePaul 24-8 with eight shots on goal to the Blue Demons' two.
  • The Hoyas took 15 corner kicks to DePaul's two.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero had two saves in the game, while Nuelle managed eight.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Tuesday in nonconference play as the squad hosts Lehigh at Shaw Field in a 3 p.m. matchup.  Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
