Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 12 Hoyas Defeat Lehigh 2-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 12 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a pair of unassisted goals to down the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Shaw Field.  With the win, the Hoyas improved to 8-1-1 on the season while Lehigh moved to 7-3-1 on the year.

Sounds of the Game
  • "As soon as you get the lead, it's the question of can you do the little things right to extend it?  I would have liked to see us a little more clinical but happy to get the win."
  • "The group we have give us a lot of great options and when they're all healthy we need to petition for a 15-man on the field sport.  We have guys we want to get on and guys we need to get on to get the fitness level up, but at the moment it's who we are and we'll take the depth for sure." – Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring early as senior captain Achara had the ball fall to his feet and he fired to the far post to make it 1-0 in the 13th minute.  It marked Achara's first goal of the season in just his second game back from injury.
  • More opportunities came as Georgetown dominated possession with a 13-1 shot advantage in the first half.
  • Just minutes into the second half, a shot from junior Jack Beer was saved by the hand of Mountain Hawk keeper Will Smith as the rebound fell to junior Foster McCune whose shot was stopped by the post.
  • In the 49th minute, junior Jacob Montes dribbled across the top of the box and fired past Smith for an unassisted goal, his fifth of the season, giving the Blue & Gray the 2-0 advantage.
  • Late in the game, sophomore goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis maintained the clean sheet with a huge save on a Mountain Hawk penalty kick.
  • In the final minutes, Achara had two more great opportunities as both were stopped. One was cleared by the Mountain Hawk defense and the other resulted in a Smith kick save.

Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Lehigh 27-6 with 12 shots on goal to the Mountain Hawks' four.
  • The Hoyas took two corner kicks to Lehigh's six.
  • Nikopolidis had four saves and the win, while Smith managed 10.

The Hoyas will be back in action on Friday in a BIG EAST Conference matchup with the Seton Hall Pirates at 3 p.m. at Shaw Field. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
