Omaha, Nebraska – The second-seeded Georgetown women's soccer team fell to the top-seeded Xavier Musketeers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Championship match at Morrison Stadium. The nationally-ranked No. 18 Hoyas allowed a pair of goals in the first half from Xavier and couldn't find a way to respond for the remainder of the game. With the loss, GU falls to 15-4-2 on the season while the Musketeers advance to 14-3-3.
COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
Obviously it's disappointing for our streak to end, but you've got to give a lot of credit to Xavier; they've been the best team all year. To win both the regular season and championship, there's no argument against that and I know how difficult that is because we've done it ourselves, so credit to them. The game itself, the wind made it a challenge in the first half. We took our chances of going against the wind and hoping we could survive and then get to the second half where we knew what we needed to do. They scored two goals in the first half with the strong wind and it was always a tough ask to get back into the game after that. We had our chances and could have made it 2-1, which then would have made it a whole different game.
At the end of the day, I can't find fault with our team for what they were doing. We tried everything possible. We tried three different systems in the second half and moved personnel around and help Paula [Germino-Watnick] get on the ball more, but Xavier just had an answer for everything, so we have to give them credit. We will regroup and hopefully tomorrow afternoon we will hear our name during the selection show and we will have another week to play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Musketeers took an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute during a counter attack.
- Xavier made it 2-0 with a goal just before the end of the first half with a shot from 14 yards out.
- Graduate student Amanda Carolan had a good opportunity to put GU on the board in the 64th minute as she drove the ball right to the net, but her shot went just right of the post.
- Georgetown came out more dominant in the second half but an aggressive Xavier defense shut down all of GU's chances. The Hoyas allowed XU to take just one shot in the second half.
OF NOTE
- Carolan, senior Sarah Trissel and freshman Julia Leas were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
- Georgetown finished with a 15-9 advantage on shots and 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
