WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team dropped a nonconference game to visiting Penn State 81-66 on Thursday evening. The game was part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games, an early season an annual early-season series of eight games played between the BIG EAST and Big Ten Conferences and named in honor of BIG EAST founder and basketball visionary Dave Gavitt.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Omer Yurtseven recorded his third double-double in as many games as he put up 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
- James Akinjo was also in double figures with 13 points.
- Jagan Mosely had a team-high three assists.
- The Hoyas forced 20 Penn State turnovers with nine steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Down by as many as 18 (25-7) early, the Hoyas started to chip away at the deficit, tallying nine unanswered to spark a 15-3 run over the next five minutes of action. Akinjo's five points from a triple and a layup sparked the run with six different Hoyas putting up points in the stretch.
- Using a small 6-2 run to close the first, Georgetown trailed 42-34 at the break.
- In the second frame, the Blue & Gray opened with a Yurtseven slam converted to a traditional three-point play to pull within five.
- For every basket the Blue & Gray put up, Penn State had an answer and the five-point deficit early was the closest GU would get.
