WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped another close one Sunday afternoon falling 52-49 to the George Washington Colonials at the Charles E. Smith Center. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 1-4 on the season while the Colonials move to 3-3 overall.
How it Happened
- George Washington jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead as the Hoyas struggled to hit early. Senior Anita Kelava opened the scoring at 5:55 but the Hoyas had an uphill battle.
- Free throws from senior Brianna Jones and junior Tatiana Thompson cut the lead to four, but GW managed to score making it 16-10 at the end of the first.
- Three turnovers and a pair of buckets from Jones cut the lead to two to open the second and forced a Colonial timeout. The break did not favor GW, as Jones stole the ball and found sophomore Shanniah Wright who tied the game at 16.
- George Washington answered but a three-point play from graduate student Taylor Barnes gave the Hoyas their first lead of the game.
- Both teams went cold to end the half, but a steal in the final second gave Kelava a pair of free throws as GU went into the half leading 27-25.
- Midway through the third quarter with the game tied at 33, GW managed an 8-0 run that would span the final five minutes making it 41-33 going into the final stanza.
- The Hoyas battled back in the fourth with a 3-pointer from Jones sparking a 4-0 run and cutting it to three 43-40 with 5:12 left to play.
- Following a media timeout and a free throw, Thompson took it her herself with a 5-1 run including a three-point play to tie the game at 45.
- Both teams would have a two-point lead in the final minute, but a free throw with 45 seconds to go gave GW the advantage and the eventual 52-49 win.
Of Note
- Jones led the Blue & Gray with 12 points, while Wright finished with 11 points and five rebounds as the two Hoyas in double figures.
- Georgetown was outrebounded 38-37, but forced 22 Colonial turnovers while committing 12 on 10 steals.
- The Hoyas shot 29.5 percent (18 for 61) from the field but allowed GW 43.8 percent (21 for 48).
