LOS ANGELES – The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a big performance from beyond the arc to pick up a 64-53 win over the Loyola Marymount Lions Friday evening at the LMU Thanksgiving Classic at Gersten Pavilion. Four 3-pointers in the third quarter helped improve the Blue & Gray to 2-4 on the season, while the Lions dropped to 2-5 on the year.
Sounds of the Game
- "Getting a win after a couple of close losses was really important. Those close ones can make you lose your steam, so to come on the road and win in somebody else's house was great. I was happy to see us perform on the offensive side, but I commend this team for their defense because they've played well on defense in every game."
How it Happened
- LMU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead before layups from sophomores Cassandra Gordon and Tayanna Jones cut the deficit back to three.
- The Hoyas battled and were down three 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.
- Graduate student Brianna Jones opened the second with a pair of baskets to take the lead 18-17 at the 6:40 mark. Tayanna Jones then added a free throw, but the Lions answered with a trey.
- A three-point play from Tayanna Jones gave the Blue & Gray the advantage, but it would continue to be a back-and-forth affair.
- A 5-0 run over the final three minutes of first-half action including three points from graduate student Taylor Barnes gave the Blue & Gray the 29-24 lead at the break.
- The Hoyas got hot from beyond the arc in the third with a quartet of 3-pointers from Gordon, Barnes and sophomore Nikola Kovacikova as well as a jumper from Brianna Jones to make it 45-33 and force a Lions timeout. In all, it was a 14-2 run.
- That run would prove to be the dagger as the Blue & Gray held on in the final stanza.
- Brianna Jones hit a pair of treys, and junior Breonna Mayfield as well as senior Anita Kelava both added a pair of buckets as Georgetown held on for the 64-53 victory.
Of Note
- Brianna Jones led the Blue & Gray with 16 points and six rebounds, while Tayanna Jones finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Barnes rounded out those in double figures with 11 points in the game.
- Mayfield was the leading rebounder with eight boards to go along with her four points.
- Georgetown outrebounded LMU 43-38, and forced 17 Lion turnovers on 10 steals, while committing just 10.
- The Hoyas shot 37 percent (25-68) from the field but were an impressive 41 percent (7-17) from three.
- The defense allowed just 36 percent (19-53) shooting from the Lions.
