Georgetown Opens 2019-20 Season Wednesday Against Mount St. Mary’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will tip off the 2019-20 season on Wednesday night when the Hoyas host Mount St. Mary's at Capital One Arena. The opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

  • Wednesday's game can be seen live on CBS Sports Network with Tom McCarthy calling the play-by-play and Pete Gillen providing analysis.
  • The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 radio station with Rich Chvotkin in his 46th season on the call.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas are coming off a 19-14 overall record in 2018-19, including a 9-9 mark in BIG EAST play.
  • Georgetown earned a berth in the 2019 NIT, the first postseason bid of Head Coach Patrick Ewing's tenure.
  • The squad returns four of its five starters from a season ago and have nine returners in= addition to seven newcomers.
  • Sophomore James Akinjo, last season's BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, was selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team.
  • Senior Omer Yurtseven is entering his first season in a Hoya uniform and earned Preseason All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honors.
  • Yurtseven was also among 20 men's basketball players selected to the watch list for the 2020 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award.
 
SCOUTING MOUNT ST. MARY'S
  • Mount St. Mary's went 9-22 last season and was tabbed to finish seventh in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Poll.
  • The Mount does not have a senior on this year's roster, and returns 97 percent of the team's scoring from a year ago.
  • Reigning NEC Rookie of the Year Vado Morse headlines the Mount's returnees this season after averaging 14.7 ppg in 2018-19.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Georgetown and Mount St. Mary's are meeting for the 29th time in a series history that dates back to the 1925-26 season. The Hoyas hold a 23-5 record against The Mount.
  • The Hoyas have won the past five matchups, including a 102-68 victory two seasons ago.
  • In the most recent meeting, five Hoyas were in double figures including Jahvon Blair with 19 points, Jagan Mosely with 15 points and Jamorko Pickett added 14.
  • The Hoyas are 50-12 all-time against current members of the NEC, and are 2-0 under Head Coach Patrick Ewing, including the victory over Mount St. Mary's in November 2017.
  • Saturday will be Georgetown's only matchup with an opponent from the NEC this season.
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Hoyas will remain home as part of a four-game homestand to open the season, hosting Central Arkansas at Capital One Arena on Saturday, Nov. 9. Tipoff is scheduled for noon and the game will be broadcast live on MASN2.
