Women’s Basketball Loses a Heartbreaker to Rider

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost a 65-64 heartbreaker to the Rider Broncs on Saturday at McDonough Arena.  With the loss, Georgetown falls to 2-8 on the season while Rider improves to 5-2 on the year. The game marked GU's final nonconference home game of the 2019-20 season.

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas scored off of the jump ball with a bucket from graduate student Brianna Jones. The Broncs gained the lead, but a layup from graduate student Taylor Barnes put the Hoyas back on top.
  • Rider would answer ending the first quarter with a slight two-point advantage
  • With the score at 20-16 in the second half, sophomore Tayanna Jones hit a jumper, and a steal on defense from freshman Graceann Bennett gave GU the ball and allowed Bennett to make a layup to tie the game at 20.
  • Rider would come back hitting from beyond the arc, but Brianna Jones answered with a trey of her own.
  • Free throws made the difference as Georgetown went into the break leading 30-28
  • Georgetown went up by four on a pair of free throws from Tatiana Thompson, but Rider quickly regained the lead.
  • The contest would go back and forth with neither team ever taking over.  Late in the third quarter, a 6-0 run to move ahead 47-42.  GU called timeout and came out of it with a jumper by senior Marvellous Osagie-Erese in her first-career start.  Brianna Jones added a free throw as GU trailed 47-45 at the end of the period.
  • Osagie-Erese made the difference as the Hoyas began the fourth hitting a trey.
  • Georgetown went up by four, but Rider came roaring back.
  • The Hoyas would regain the one-point lead on four more occasions, but a Bronc layup with eight seconds remaining was it as GU's last play fell short and the Hoyas lost 65-64.

Of Note
  • Three Hoyas led the Blue & Gray with 12 points apiece as Brianna Jones, Osagie-Erese and Barnes all contributed.  It marked a career best for Osagie-Erese.

  • Georgetown outrebounded Rider 47-36, and both teams had 14 turnovers in the contest.
