PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 57-39 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks Saturday afternoon at the Hychte Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Maryland. The victory was the nonconference finale for the Blue & Gray, which improved to 3-8 on the season while UMES fell to 3-9 on the year.
Sounds of the Game
- "This was a big win for us mentally. Just to get a win under your belt after losing the last five games by single digits, those games could have gone the other way. So being up 16 today, we knew what we had to do to keep them motivated and show them that it's their responsibility to hold that lead. Going into BIG EAST, we're 0-0 and this will give us confidence that we can erase the nonconference and try to make noise in the league." – Head Coach James Howard
How it Happened
- Georgetown opened the scoring, but the Hawks came roaring back taking the 11-6 lead. Graduate students Brianna Jones and Taylor Barnes combined for a 6-0 run as Georgetown regained the advantage 12-11 and forced a UMES timeout.
- The Blue & Gray would add a 3-pointer from sophomore Nikola Kovacikova to make it 15-12 at the end of the first stanza.
- GU began the second quarter with a 9-1 run to move ahead 24-13. The defense would hold UMES without a field goal in the second quarter to lead 28-17 at the break.
- Back to back treys from senior Marvellous Osagie-Erese and Barnes forced an early Hawk timeout as Georgetown went up 34-17.
- The Hawks came back as Brooklyn Bailey scored eight quick points of her own before Barnes ended the momentum with a trey.
- Georgetown would hold off any run as late 3-pointers from Barnes and sophomore Nikola Kovacikova put GU on top 46-35 heading into the final quarter.
- The Blue & Gray continued to hit in the fourth period with triples from sophomores Tayanna Jones and Cassandra Gordon.
- In the final minutes of action, the Hoyas would increase the rotation and cruise to the 57-39 victory.
