Career Bests from Yurtseven and McClung Power Hoyas Past Samford 99-71

WASHINGTON – Career efforts from Omer Yurtseven and Mac McClung pushed the Georgetown University men's basketball team to its fifth-straight win, 99-71 over Samford on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena. With the victory, the Hoyas improve to 9-3 on the season while the Bulldogs slip to 6-8.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Omer Yurtseven led the Hoyas with his sixth double-double of the season, finishing with a career-high 32 points and career-best 17 rebounds. He hit 15-of-21 shots from the floor and also grabbed eight offensive boards to go along with four blocks.
  • Mac McClung tallied 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds to go along with five assists against zero turnovers.
  • Jamorko Pickett and Jahvon Blair were also in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Terrell Allen paced the offense with seven assists.
  • Georgetown shot 48.7 (38-78) percent from the floor and outrebounded Samford 53-30, including 20 offensive boards. It is the second time this season the Hoyas have grabbed more than 50 rebounds.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams started off slow before the Blue & Gray staged a 12-0 run behind five different players putting up points. The Hoyas led 20-9 with 11:48 to go in the first half.
  • The Hoyas went on an 11-6 run, tallying six unanswered points in a span of 1:03, prompting a timeout from the Bulldogs as Georgetown led 31-15.
  • Out of the huddle, McClung put up a quick five points for GU and followed it up with assists to Yurtseven and Pickett as Georgetown took a commanding 40-18 lead with 3:27 to play.
  • The Bulldogs wouldn't go away as the Hoyas held a 44-31 advantage at the break.
  • Georgetown opened the second half on an 18-5 run to take a 62-36 lead bolstered by a traditional three-point play from McClung and five-straight points from Jagan Mosely to close the run with 16:06 remaining.
  • The Hoyas continued to pile on as a Blair triple pushed the lead to 27 (72-45) with 12:21 to play.
  • GU continued pouring in the points and extending their lead to as many as 30 as McClung knocked down another bucket to pull ahead 94-64 (3:11) At the final whistle, the Blue & Gray sealed the 99-71 victory.
 
OF NOTE
  • Yurtseven's 32 points is a career high, besting his previous record of 29 set in January 2018.
  • His 17 rebounds is also a career high, topping Yurtseven's previous set in January 2017.
  • For the second-straight game, Yurtseven had attained the double-double by halftime as he went into the locker room with 16 points and 11 rebounds. With his sixth double-double, Yurtseven matches his season total from the 2017-18 campaign.
  • McClung's seven rebounds was a career best as he topped his previous record of six boards set at Providence in 2019.
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Hoyas will wrap up nonconference play when they conclude their homestand against American University on Saturday, Dec. 28. Tipoff at Capital One Arena is scheduled for noon and the game will be broadcast on FS1. Fans can listen locally on The Team 980 with Rich Chvotkin on the call.
