WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell 65-56 to the Creighton Bluejays in the BIG EAST opener at McDonough Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Hoyas led the Bluejays at the half, but Creighton bounced back in the third quarter to claim the victory. With the loss, the Blue & Gray falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in BIG EAST play while Creighton advances to 8-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Bluejays came out strong right away with a 3-0 start off of a fast break until back-to-back baskets from the Hoyas put them ahead.
- The scoring went back and forth in the first period but GU came out on top 12-9 thanks to a 3-pointer from Marvellous Osagie-Erese in the final two minutes.
- Georgetown kept its strong momentum going into the second stanza. Tayanna Jones and Nikola Kovacikova combined for an 8-0 run for the Hoyas and led Creighton 33-23 at the half.
- Creighton came back as Jaylyn Agnew scored seven-straight points for the Bluejays and cut the lead to just three coming out of the half. The Bluejays took a 37-35 lead in the third quarter off of a 14-2 scoring run.
- Taylor Barnes led the Hoyas in the third stanza, scoring six of their seven points. GU trailed 47-40 going into the final 10 minutes of play.
- Georgetown bounced back in the final quarter, but it was not enough as the Hoyas fell 65-56 in the BIG EAST opener.
Of Note
- Barnes led the squad with 16 points and went 9-11 from the charity stripe. Tayanna Jones and Kovacikova led out the Hoyas in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Brianna Jones led the team with 11 rebounds while Osagie-Erese and Anita Kelava each had six. Osagie-Erese also had a team-high three assists.
- Kovacikova had eight points going into halftime, going 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc.
- The Hoyas shot 81 percent from the free throw line (13-16) and 37 percent from the field (19-51). They also shot 31 percent from the 3-point line (5-16).
- Georgetown outrebounded the Bluejays 36-30.
