WASHINGTON – A strong fourth-quarter performance by the Georgetown University women's basketball team gave the Hoyas a 62-53 victory over the Providence College Friars on Tuesday afternoon at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Blue & Gray advances to 4-9 on the season and 1-1 in the BIG EAST Conference, while the Friars fall to 9-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Sounds of the Game
- "Providence is a good team, they'll be tough throughout the BIG EAST. This was a big win for us having some kids step up. Tayanna Jones continues to play well after two BIG EAST games, and Marvellous Osagie-Erese continues to play great. Those two helped us, and we got a big push from Shanniah Wright in the fourth quarter rebounding and giving us a post presence. It's the wacky, wacky BIG EAST where everyone is capable of beating anyone if you're playing well on that night. Now with this squad, it's about getting more experience and learning how to win." – Head Coach James Howard
How it Happened
- The Hoyas came out strong in the opening minutes with back-to-back baskets from Taylor Barnes and Anita Kelava. GU continued its dominant performance and led the Friars 11-4, but a pair of 3-pointers and a layup put Providence on top 12-11 to end the first quarter.
- Nikola Kovacikova immediately downed a trey in the start of the second stanza to take back the lead for the Hoyas.
- The scoring went back and forth during the second period, but it was a 3-pointer from Tayanna Jones that made it a one-point game at the half as the Hoyas trailed the Friars 24-23.
- Both teams started off slow coming out of the half, but another trey from Jones tied it up at 32 with four minutes left in the third quarter.
- The Friars took back the lead with a 3-pointer, but a jumper from Barnes made it a one-point difference, 37-36, going into the final stanza.
- In the final quarter, Barnes immediately put GU on top 39-37 with a trey off of a Providence turnover. This sparked a 7-0 run, forcing the Friars to call a timeout.
- Georgetown would lead by as much as 12 in the final quarter as Jones and Marvellous Osagie-Erese added triples.
- Free throws finished the game for the Blue & Gray, resulting in a 62-53 victory over the Friars.
