NEW YORK – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell 71-54 to the St. John's University Red Storm Friday evening at Carnesecca Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Blue & Gray falls to 4-10 on the season and 1-2 in the BIG EAST Conference, while the Red Storm improve to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the league.
How it Happened
- Georgetown struck first with a bucket from graduate student Taylor Brown, but the Red Storm answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead.
- The Hoyas pulled within two, 10-8, on a jumper in transition from senior Anita Kelava, and then again, 14-12, on a shot from Barnes but SJU kept the lead ending the first stanza on top 19-12.
- Sophomore guard Nikola Kovacikova took over early in the second scoring GU's first eight points and hitting a 3-pointer that pulled the Blue & Gray within five 25-20.
- Graduate student Brianna Jones then took her turn with seven points of her own matching the Red Storm.
- Down six with 1:48 to go in the half, St. John's managed a late surge to make it 38-27 at the break.
- The Blue & Gray would battle in the third as buckets from freshman Graceann Bennett and Jones would cut the lead to nine on two occasions. St. John's pulled away late as the Johnnies led 55-38 at the end of the third quarter.
- Georgetown could not find a comeback in the final period eventually falling 71-54.
Of Note
- Kovacikova led the way with 15 points, while Barnes managed 13 and Jones scored 11 to round out those in double figures.
- Kelava had a team-high seven rebounds, while Jones was second with six.
- Georgetown shot 37 percent in the game hitting 19 of 15 shots, while St. John's was 43 percent from the field (29-68).
- GU was outrebounded 44-33 and committed 18 turnovers to the Red Storm's 10.
