Georgetown Drops a Close One at Columbia

NEW YORK CITY – The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a tough 54-49 decision to the Columbia University Lions Friday morning at Levien Gymnasium.  The Hoyas battled, but could not overcome a late drought to fall to 2-6 on the season while Columbia improves to 5-3 on the year.

How it Happened
  • Georgetown began the game in an impressive manner as a trey from sophomore Cassandra Gordon and a jumper from freshman Graceann Bennett made it 7-2 early.
  • The Blue & Gray would cling to the advantage with solid defense on the other end of the floor before back-to-back buckets from graduate student Brianna Jones and junior Tatiana Thompson helped GU to the 21-14 lead after the first quarter.
  • The second quarter would prove different as a 10-0 Lion run gave Columbia the lead as the Hoyas struggled to score.
  • In the final three minutes of the half, the defense made the different and a drive and dish from graduate student Taylor Barnes to junior Breonna Mayfield made the score 25-24 in favor of the Hoyas at the half.
  • As Columbia jumped out to a three-point lead in the third, but Barnes hit a trey to tie the game and Jones added a jumper.
  • A three-point play from sophomore Shanniah Wright would put GU back on top, but it would continue to be a back-and-forth affair with the Blue & Gray leading 38-37 at the end of the third period.
  • Georgetown would lead by as much as three until midway through the find stanza.  Matching treys tied the game at 45 and Columbia managed to grab the lead which it would not relinquish as GU eventually fell 54-49.

Of Note
  • Barnes led the Blue & Gray with 17 points and four steals as the lone Hoya in double figures.
  • Senior Anita Kelava pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded 42-34, and forced 14 Lion turnovers on six steals
  • GU committed just six turnovers in the game.
  • The Hoyas shot 27 percent (19-71) from the field and allowed Columbia 32 percent (21-66) shooting in the game.
  • There were 13 lead changes and five ties in the contest.
