WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team dropped an 11-2 decision to the George Washington Colonials in the final game of the Gardner-Webb University Tournament Sunday. With the loss, the Hoyas hold a record of 1-3 while the Colonials advance to 3-2 after opening weekend.
Junior
Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) led the squad offensively going 2 for 3 at the plate and freshmen
Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia) and
Kiki Besnard (Irvine, Calif. / Northwood) each recorded a double. In the circle, sophomore
London Diller (Abilene, Texas / George Ranch) allowed 11 runs off of 11 hits while walking three and striking out two.
The Colonials led the way from the very beginning of the game and scored five runs in the first two innings. The Hoyas entered the scoring column in the bottom of the third when Forshey landed a double to right center and sent Dolby home to make it 5-1. Shortly after, junior
Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) singled to right center, allowing Forshey to add another run for GU.
The Blue & Gray's defense could not stop George Washington's offensive efforts and allowed the Colonials to score six more runs, forcing the game to conclude after the fifth inning at 11-2.
George Washington outhit Georgetown 11-6 and GU tallied a pair of errors while the Colonials did not commit any.
The Blue & Gray will travel to Las Vegas next weekend for a five-game series at UNLV at the 2019 Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic held Feb. 15-17. Georgetown will face Seattle, BYU, Utah Valley, UC Davis and tournament host UNLV. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
