Box Score 2 WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team fell to the Seattle Redhawks (3-4) and the BYU Cougars (2-4) on the first day of the 2019 Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic in Las Vegas, hosted by UNLV. The Hoyas lost to Seattle 13-3 in game one and then a heartbreaking 3-1 setback in the final inning against the Cougars in game two. With the pair of losses, GU holds an overall record of 1-5.
Senior
Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough) and sophomore
Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda) led the Hoyas on the first day with two hits apiece. Amen recorded both of hers against Seattle, including a home run, and Jones split her hits between the games which included a double. Senior
Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md. / Northern) and junior
Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) also added homers to the box score.
In game one against the Redhawks, the Hoyas gave up four runs in the first inning. After a quick second inning due to a strong defensive effort by Georgetown, Seattle made it 13-0 in the top of the third. As the Blue & Gray battled to fight back, Holiday rallied up the squad in the bottom of the fourth with a homer and was followed with two more home runs from Bennett and Amen to make it 13-3, but it was not enough for the GU as the Hoyas fell 13-3 in five innings.
Against Seattle, junior
Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va. / James Madison HS) took the nod in the circle for the first 2.1 innings, allowing eight runs off of six hits while walking two and striking out two. Junior
Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) allowed five runs off of five hits while tallying a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore
London Diller (Abilene, Texas / George Ranch) closed out the game against the Redhawks with four strikeouts.
Game two against the Cougars began at a slower pace than the first game. Both teams played the first two innings quickly due to strong defensive efforts, but BYU went on the board in the third to take the 1-0 lead. Georgetown had a good chance to tie it up in the fifth when sophomores
Deirdre Gallo (Shrewsbury, Mass. / St. Peter Marian) and
Macy Cartwright (Naples, Fla. / Naples) were on second and third, respectively, anticipating a passed ball but the inning ended before Cartwright could score for GU.
The Blue & Gray made it even 1-1 in the top of the sixth when sophomore
NeNe Campos (Nogales, Ariz. / Canyon Del Oro) used her speed to her advantage to advance to each base. Campos scored for the Hoyas when Jones singled to second base, giving GU a chance to take the lead. However, BYU scored its game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh off of a two-run-homer to seal the victory.
Junior
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas / St. John's School) made her debut this season in the circle against the Cougars. Pacha pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing a run off of one hit and walking four while striking out two. Vannicola relieved Pacha for the last 3.2 innings and gave up a pair of runs off of four hits. Vannicola tallied three strikeouts and three walks.
The Hoyas will return to action tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 16, and will take on Utah Valley at Noon EST, followed by tournament host UNLV at 4 p.m. EST. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
