NEWARK, N.J. – The Georgetown University men's basketball team dropped a 90-75 decision to Seton Hall at the Prudential Center on Wednesday evening. The Hoyas fall to 15-10 overall on the year and slip to 5-7 in BIG EAST Conference play.
Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) led a duo in double figures as he scored 20 points while
Greg Malinowski (Chantilly, Va. / Episcopal / William & Mary) added 16 off the bench on 7-of-10 shooting. Govan's six rebounds was a squad best.
Josh LeBlanc's (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) three rejections was a team best as the Hoyas tallied seven in the game.
Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J. / St. Anthony) dished five assists to pace the offense. Georgetown shot 45.3 percent (29 of 64) from the floor.
The freshman duo of LeBlanc and
Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) got things started combining for the first five points for the Blue & Gray. A Govan dunk gave the Hoyas the 7-6 edge before Seton Hall staged a 12-0 run to take a quick double-digit lead. Govan's layup ended the run but the Pirates drained a 3-pointer to maintain the comfortable advantage. As SHU continued increase its lead, GU looked to its bench with Malinowski and
Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va. / The Carlisle School) knocking down a pair of buckets.
A commanding dunk from Mosely that was converted to a three-point play was not enough to spark the GU offense as the Pirates continued to knock down buckets and get trips to the line, where both teams were flawless for the first stanza.
The Hoyas scored five unanswered late in the frame to prompt a Seton Hall timeout. Out of the huddle,
James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) worked the lane and hit his layup as the Hoyas closed the first half on a 7-0 run to trail 48-35 at the break.
Govan started the scoring in the second half for the Hoyas tallying GU's first two buckets. The Pirates kept pounding and led by as many as 21 by the first media timeout. Georgetown went on a 7-0 run bolstered by a three-point play from Johnson sandwiched between layups from Malinowski and LeBlanc.
Seton Hall pulled away again but a back-to-back Malinowski triples cut the deficit to 13 and forced a Pirate timeout. Every time the Blue & Gray chipped away at the lead, the SHU would sink a shot from downtown. As Malinowski started to get hot, the Hoyas managed to cut the deficit to 11 following a Malinowski layup and
Jamorko Pickett's (Washington, D.C. / Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) 3-pointer.
However, 11 was as close as the Hoyas would get as Seton Hall closed the game on a 9-4 run for the 90-75 victory.
Seton Hall's Myles Powell led the squad with 30 points. The Pirates (15-9, 6-6 BIG EAST) shot 49.2 percent (30 of 61) from the field.
