Softball Falls to North Florida and Albany

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of losses on the second day of the Madeira Beach Tournament in Madeira Beach, Florida. The Hoyas fell to North Florida (6-5) 10-1 in game one and later to Albany (1-3) 6-3. With the pair of losses, the Blue & Gray hold an overall record of 3-10.

The Hoyas were led by junior Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) and sophomore Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda), who tallied three and four hits on the day, respectively. Jones landed a total of three doubles, two against Albany, and went 2 for 2 at the plate against the Ospreys. Holiday recorded a double and a homer, as well as three RBIs. Additionally, freshman Kiki Besnard (Irvine, Calif. / Northwood) had a pair of hits against the Great Danes, including a double.

Freshman Cassie Henning (Atlanta, Ga. / Wesleyan) took the nod in the circle in game one, allowing five runs off of a pair of hits. Junior Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va. / James Madison HS) relieved the young pitcher for the next 4.1 innings and allowed five more runs off of 10 hits while striking out four.

Against the Ospreys, the Hoyas gave up seven runs in the top of the first inning and struggled to bounce back from UNF's quick lead. In the bottom of the third, with Jones on base, Holiday doubled down the left field line, scoring Jones and giving GU its lone run of the game.

North Florida went on to score three more runs in the top of the fifth off of a home run and a pair of doubles, but Georgetown could not find any more opportunities to score.

In game two against Albany, sophomore London Diller (Abilene, Texas / George Ranch) pitched a complete game. The sophomore allowed six runs off of six hits with one strikeout.

Besnard led the Hoyas off at the plate and started the rally with a double to left center. A few batters later, with Jones on base, Holiday singled to right center and scored Jones to give GU an early 1-0 lead. The Great Danes had an opportunity to tie it up in the bottom of the second with a runner on third, but Henning's clutch line drive catch at third base rejected the runner's chance to score.

Albany made it even at 1 in the bottom of the third, but Holiday responded in the next inning with a homer to take back the lead. The Great Danes went on to score five more runs in the following three innings and GU could not catch up. The Blue & Gray scored one more run in the top of the seventh off of a hit by Besnard, making it 6-3, but it was not enough to come out on top.

Georgetown will play its final game of the Madeira Beach Tournament on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against the Purdue Boilmakers. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
