MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Georgetown University softball team fell 5-2 to the Purdue Boilmakers in the final game of the Madeira Beach Tournament in Madeira Beach, Florida. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 3-11 on the season.
On the offensive end, freshman
Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia), junior
Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) and sophomore
Deirdre Gallo (Shrewsbury, Mass. / St. Peter Marian) recorded two hits apiece. Forshey recorded her fourth double of the season in her first at-bat of the game.
In the circle, junior
Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va. / James Madison HS) pitched a complete game. The junior allowed five runs off of eight hits while walking three and striking out one.
Despite a strong first inning for Forshey, who landed a double with two outs on a full count, the Boilmakers took a 4-0 lead after the first two innings.
Georgetown entered the scoring column in the top of the third. With two outs, Forshey singled to center field and advanced to second after Holiday landed a trip to first base with four walks. Bennett continued the rally and singled down the right field line, scoring Forshey and putting GU on the board 4-1.
Purdue responded in the next inning with its second homer of the game, taking a 5-1 advantage.
In the top of the sixth, with sophomore
NeNe Campos (Nogales, Ariz. / Canyon Del Oro) and senior
Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough) on second and third base, respectively, junior
Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) brought Amen home with a sacrifice hit, putting GU down by three.
Neither team found any more opportunities to score in the final innings, making the final score 5-2.
