Offense Powers Baseball Past GW 14-4

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Georgetown University baseball team exploded for 15 hits, including six for extra bases, as the Hoyas cruised to a 14-4 victory over George Washington on Wednesday afternoon at GW's Barcroft Park. With the win, GU moves to 1-6 on the year while the Colonials fall to 3-4.

Seeing his first collegiate action, Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) was on base five times with four singles and a walk. He also drove in a pair of runs. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) had three hits, was on base four times and drove in four runs while scoring twice. Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington & Lee University) was on base five times with two doubles and two walks while scoring four runs. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had a pair of hits and three RBIs. The Georgetown offense had 15 hits and drew 10 walks.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) made his first start of the season and went 7.0 strong innings. He allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking none. Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) struck out one in an inning of relief.

The Hoyas jumped on the board in the top of the first as Ruedisili drew a leadoff walk and stole second. He came around to score with two outs when Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) hit a pop up that was dropped by the first baseman.

George Washington immediately drew even in the bottom half of the inning as a leadoff double and two ground outs knotted the score at one.

Ruedisili again started a rally in the top of the third, reaching on an error to start the inning. Ryan M. Davis chased him all the way around on a triple down the right field line to give GU a 2-1 lead.

The Colonials again responded, tying the game right back up in the bottom of the third on a trio of singles and a balk.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Hoyas put together a two-out rally to retake the lead 3-2. Willis singled with two outs and raced around to score on a double by Yareb Martinez (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) over the right fielder's head.

The first five batters reached in the top of the fifth inning as the Hoyas scored three times to open up a 6-2 advantage. Ryan M. Davis led off with a walk and moved up to second on a single by Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk). Ryan P. Davis laced a double into the right-center field gap to score a run and send McCabe to third. After a walk loaded the bases, Weisenberg lined a two-run single into left to bring the GU lead to four.

Georgetown blew the game open with an eight-run eighth inning. Ruedisili had two doubles and Ryan M. Davis also had two hits in the frame and combined to drive in five runs. Weisenberg also had a sacrifice fly and Willis had a two-run single. The Hoyas had five hits and drew four walks in the inning.

GW scored a couple of runs off of Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) in the bottom of the ninth to provide the final score, 14-4.

The Hoyas will travel to Florida for their annual eight-game, 10-day spring break trip. Georgetown will start the trip with three games at the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational, hosted by Stetson in DeLand, Florida, where the squad will face Sacred Heart (Friday, March 1), Stetson (Saturday, March 2) and St. Louis (Sunday, March 3).
