INDIANAPOLIS – The Georgetown women's basketball team (13-14, 7-9 BIG EAST) will hit the road to close out the regular season with a pair of BIG EAST Conference matchups on the weekend slate. The Hoyas will face the Butler University Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The squad will then travel to Xavier University for a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Georgetown is currently tied for sixth in league play sitting at 7-9 with two games to go. The top six teams in the league receive a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep which will be held at Wintrust Arena March 9-12.
On Monday, senior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week. White led the Hoyas to back-to-back wins, averaging a league-best 24.0 points to go along with 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.5 assists. The guard celebrated senior day on Sunday with 29 points off 8-of-16 shooting, 3-of-6 from deep, seven rebounds, three dimes and three steals as Georgetown defeated St. John's 82-80 for the first time in the last 11 tries. She added 19 points, six boards, four assists and four steals in Friday's come-from-behind 51-43 win over Seton Hall.
White increased her career points total to 1,893 to climb to No. 2 all-time on the Hilltop, while her 1,129 BIG EAST points rank 13th all-time. She is also fifth on the NCAA's active career leaders listing in steals and Georgetown's all-time steals leader.
GU has three players averaging double digits as graduate student guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) and White lead the team with 16.0 and 15.5 ppg, respectively. Graduate student
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) is third with 10.8 ppg. Adomako and White are averaging 7.8 and 7.3 rpg to rank first and second on the squad, White has a team-best 86 assists on the season as well as 73 steals, and Venson has 65 helpers to her credit. Adomako leads GU with 44 blocks, while junior forward
Anita Kelava (Zagreb, Croatia / Croatian National Team / Maine) also has 41 blocks to her credit.
Georgetown leads the BIG EAST in blocks with 4.6 bpg. Adomako ranks fourth in the league in scoring, while White sits at fifth and Venson at 28th. Adomako is fifth in rebounding and White is eighth. White ranks second in the conference in steals, and Adomako is second in the league in blocks per game while Kelava sits behind her at fourth.
Butler (20-7, 10-6 BIG EAST) is coming off of one of the biggest wins in program history at then-No. 11 Marquette. BU won the fourth quarter at Marquette 18-8 to pull out a 61-57 victory. The team has locked up a first round bye and needs just one more victory to earn the third seed in the conference tournament. The Bulldogs are led by Whitney Jennings who is averaging 14.7 ppg. She is followed by Kristen Spolyar and Tori Schickel who average 12.7 ppg apiece. Schickel also leads the team with 9.0 rpg.
In the last meeting, GU fell to Butler 59-50 at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas led at the break, but a second-half run from the Bulldogs decided the game as the Blue & Gray dropped its first contest of league play. White was the lone Hoya in double figures with 11 points and six rebounds to go along with four steals. Georgetown is 5-6 all-time against Butler and 2-3 at Hinkle. The last meeting in Indy was a 63-52 Hoya victory a season ago.
Xavier (11-16, 2-14 BIG EAST) dropped its final BIG EAST road game of the season, 79-53, at then-No. 11 Marquette on Sunday. A'riana Gray led the Musketeers in scoring with 21 points on 10-for-23 shooting and also added a team-best eight rebounds. Aaliyah Dunham added 10 points in the loss. Gray is leading the team with 13.4 ppg and 11.1 rpg on the season, she is followed by Na'Teshia Owens who has 11.7 ppg for the year.
Georgetown began league play with Xavier in a 68-61 victory at McDonough Arena. Three Hoyas scored in double figures led by White with 24 points and 12 boards, while adding four steals. Adomako managed 17 points, senior guard
Brianna Jones (Babylon, N.Y. / North Babylon / Louisville) had 10 points and Venson tallied 11 points along with eight rebounds in the contest. The Hoyas are 8-6 all-time against the Musketeers and 2-4 on the road. The last meeting at Cintas Center was a 65-48 GU win last year.
