Govan Named All-BIG EAST First Team; Akinjo, LeBlanc and McClung to All-Freshman Team

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) was named All-BIG EAST First Team, as announced by the league office on Sunday. Additionally, James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory), Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) and Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) were all named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.

Govan is the 26th Hoya to be named All-BIG EAST First Team in program history and the first since 2014-15.

Leading the Hoyas with 17.6 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game, Govan is shooting nearly 50.0 percent from the floor and 41.3 percent from downtown. He adds 1.3 assists and 1.2 blocks per game as well. Govan was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nine times this season. Govan was also recently selected as a finalist for the 2019 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, recognizing the top center in men's college basketball.

In the BIG EAST, Govan ranks sixth in scoring, fifth in rebounding, as well as sixth in blocks and seventh 3-point shooting. He has posted nine double-doubles on the season and recently eclipsed the 1,600 career point mark.

This is just the second year in the history of the BIG EAST that one team has placed three players on the All-Freshman Team. Pittsburgh was the first to do it in 1987-88. Georgetown has had multiple players selected to the All-Freshman Team in nine different seasons.

Akinjo was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week four times this season. He leads all BIG EAST players with 5.4 assists per game and is second among all freshmen in scoring with 13.4 points per game. Akinjo scored over 20 points in four games this season, posted a career-high 11 assists against Creighton and dished out at least seven helpers in 12 games this season. He is one of just two players unanimously selected for the All-Freshman Team.

LeBlanc collected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors twice this season. He averaged 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 62.9 percent from the floor. LeBlanc posted six double-doubles, tying the most for a freshman at Georgetown since 2000. He ranks third overall in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, sixth in rebounding and seventh in blocked shots.

McClung also earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors twice during his rookie campaign. He led all BIG EAST freshmen with 13.4 points per game and added 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. McClung scored at least 20 points in six different games this season, including a career-high 38 points in a win over Little Rock that helped earn him National Freshman of the Week honors by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

The Hoyas closed out the 2018-19 regular season 19-12 overall and 9-9 in BIG EAST play to finish tied for third place. Georgetown will be the sixth seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament Presented by Jeep and face third-seeded Seton Hall on Thursday, March 14 at 9:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden in New York.
