Three Home Runs Power Georgetown Past Coppin State 14-5

BETHESDA, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team hit three home runs, power past Coppin State 14-5 on Wednesday afternoon in GU's home opener at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-12, while the Eagles fall to 6-6 on the season.

Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had three hits, including a pair of doubles, two RBIs and scored three runs to lead the offensive attack. Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) and Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) each homered and had two RBIs, while AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) also hit a home run.

Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) started on the mound for the Hoyas and went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) struck out a pair in an inning of work, while Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas / Trinity Christian Academy) and Miller Freeman (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell Academy) each had a strikeout in relief appearances.

After Coppin State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Hoyas answered right back, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ruedisili opened the inning with a double and, with two outs and runners on the corners, scored on a double steal. Willis followed with his first career home run, a two-run shot to the opposite field to put Georgetown up 3-2. Achecar restarted the rally with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Weisenberg. Following another walk, an RBI single by Yareb Martinez (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) pushed Weisenberg across the plate. Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) scored on a wild pitch to give GU a 6-2 lead.

The Eagles cut it to 6-3, but a two-run homer by Achecar, a lined shot over the right field fence, pushed the advantage to 8-3 in the bottom of the third. Weisenberg doubled and, two outs later, Ruedisili singled him in. An error put him into scoring position before he scored on a single by Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton), extending the lead to 10-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, a Weisenberg double and two walks loaded the bases with one out. Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field before Martinez crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it a 12-3 game.

Coppin State scored a run in the sixth, but a Weisenberg sacrifice fly got it right back in the bottom half of the inning. In the seventh, Lotsis lifted a pinch-hit home run, his first career hit, over the fence in right-center field to give GU a 14-4 lead.

The Eagles hit a solo home run in the eighth to provide the final score, 14-5.
