WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of losses to Oakland (6-10) and Stony Brook (3-7) on the second day of the Buff & Blue Challenge hosted by George Washington. With the two losses, the Hoyas fall to 7-20 on the season.
Junior
Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) led the squad with three hits on the day, including her fifth home run of the season and a pair of doubles. The first baseman brought in five RBIs for the team between the two games. Sophomore
London Diller (Sugar Land, Texas / George Ranch) and junior
Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) each recorded a double.
Freshman
Cassie Henning (Atlanta, Ga. / Wesleyan) got the nod in the circle for game one and threw 0.2 innings while allowing nine runs off of seven hits. Junior
Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) relieved Henning and did 3.1 innings of work, allowing 10 runs off of 11 hits while walking three and striking out a pair.
The Blue & Gray opened up the scoring early against the Golden Grizzlies. With sophomore
Macy Cartwright (Naples, Fla. / Naples) on base from a walk, sophomore
Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda) scored her off of an attempt to sacrifice bunt but reached first off of a throwing error. Freshman
Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia) made it 2-0 when she flied out to right field but brought in Jones from third.
Oakland answered in the bottom of the inning with nine runs to create a 9-2 advantage.
Georgetown scored another run in the next inning when Dolby reached first on another error and scored freshman
Kiki Besnard (Irvine, Calif. / Northwood) from third, making it 9-3. However, the Golden Grizzlies came back with five more runs in their at bat and made it 14-3.
In the top of the third, Holiday knocked one to center field to land a double and scored Jones and Forshey who were on base off of an error and a single to center, respectively. The rally for the Hoyas continued in the next inning after Forshey earned another RBI as she grounded out to the pitcher with bases loaded but advanced all the runners. Holiday then stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run homer to left field to make it 14-9.
The Golden Grizzlies went on to score five more runs and the Hoyas tried to rally back in the top of the fifth with a one-run double to center field from Diller, but it was not enough as GU fell 19-10 in five innings.
Diller pitched the first 5.0 innings in game two against the Seawolves and allowed eight runs off of nine hits. She walked five and struck out one. Kozak relieved Diller for the last 1.0 innings and allowed one hit.
Stony Brook opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 advantage. The Hoyas made it 3-1 in the top of the third when Cartwright grounded out to shortstop and Dolby scored on the throw. The Seawolves answered with another run in the bottom of the inning.
The Seawolves scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the 8-1 victory in five innings.
The Blue & Gray will conclude the Buff & Blue Challenge on Sunday, March 17 with a game against tournament host George Washington at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
