WASHINGTON – The No. 22 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 11 Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (5-3) 13-10 on Wednesday evening at the Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore. Georgetown cut it to one in the second half, but could not find the go-ahead goal. With the loss the Hoyas drop to 5-4 on the season and cap off a three-game road swing.
"We need to have a better sense of urgency at the beginning of games," said Georgetown Head Coach
Ricky Fried. "We've continued to fight and compete, but it's difficult to sustain the energy needed for a comeback against a quality opponent. There were a lot of positives to take away from tonight, but now we need to find a way to get the win."
Junior midfielder
Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) led the way for the Blue & Gray with a hat trick as well as one assist for four points in the contest. Junior attacker
Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy) managed two goals and an assist for three points, while classmate
Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) posted two goals in the contest. In goal, senior
Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla. / Barron Collier) played all 60 minutes and had eight saves for the evening.
The Hoyas were outshot 33-28 and pulled in just nine draw controls to Loyola's 15. The defense forced 15 Greyhounds turnovers as GU committed 11 in the game.
Loyola opened the scoring with a goal less than two minutes in, but the Hoyas matched as Bruno tallied her ninth of the season to tie it up at one. The next 10 minutes belonged to the Greyhounds as the team went on a 4-0 run before the Blue & Gray could stop the momentum with a goal from senior attacker
Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J. / Oak Knoll School) and the assist by freshman attacker
Ali Diamond (Lafayette Hill, Pa. / Plymouth-Whitemarsh) who was behind the cage at 14:21.
The Greyhounds added two more to take the five-goal lead, but GU would find the back of the net twice before the half. Lynch connected on a solo shot at 11:34. She then streaked down the field in transition and found Diamond in the middle who spun to beat one defender and fire making it 7-4 which would stand at the half.
Lynch opened the second half with a goal to pull the Hoyas within two, but Loyola answered with two of its own to make it 9-5. Lynch wasn't done for the day hitting a free position goal at 18:55 to spark a 3-0 run including a pair of scores from Ehle as she scored one in the middle and a free position tally to make it a one-goal game at 9-8.
The Greyhounds quieted the GU sideline finding the back of the cage at 13:26 to begin a four-goal run of their own. In the final five minutes of action, the Blue & Gray added two more scores as Bruno and senior attacker
Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) both got it past the keeper to pull within three. That would be as close as Georgetown would come, however, as the Hoyas eventually fell 13-10.
The Blue & Gray will return home to Cooper Field on Sunday as the squad hosts Cal Davis at 3 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Monika Moore will be available at
