WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University men's tennis team fell to the Navy Midshipmen 4-3 in a duel that came down to the last singles match. With the overall score tied at three all, Jan Kjellberg of Navy defeated
Charlie Sharton (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 to clinch the match. With the loss, the Hoyas slip to 3-10 while Navy improves to 21-12.
Navy went three for three in doubles and clinched the early team point after Greg Durham and Kjellberg defeated the duo of
Andrew Rozanov (London, England / Westminster) and
Will Sharton (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) 6-3 at No. 3.
The Midshipmen got out to an early 3-0 advantage in singles, but could not secure the clinching point until the final match. At. No. 4, Rozanov put the Hoyas on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win. The Blue & Gray took hold of the momentum and won two more matches from there. At No. 3,
Connor Lee (San Marino, Calif. / San Marino) defeated his opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 and at No. 6,
Luke Ross (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) downed Jack Dabek 6-3, 6-4.
The final point came down to No. 5 where Sharton was defeated in a two-set battle.
GU is back in action on Tuesday, April 2 as they take on Williams and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Millie West Tennis Facility.
