WASHINGTON – Senior
Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough) hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to slide past Creighton 5-4 on Sunday in the series finale between the Georgetown University softball team and the Creighton Bluejays (10-11, 1-2 BIG EAST). The Hoyas won the series 2-1 and improved to 9-22 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Amen led the squad at the plate with a pair of hits, including her grand slam along with a double. She also scored the first run of the game for GU in the third inning. Junior
Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) had a hit on the day and senior
Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md. / Northern) got on base twice with a pair of walks.
Sophomore
London Diller (Sugar Land, Texas / George Ranch) took the nod in the circle for the first 2.0 innings and allowed one run until freshman
Cassie Henning (Atlanta, Ga. / Wesleyan) relieved Diller and threw 1.0 innings and gave up three runs. Junior
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas / St. John's School) rotated in for 3.0 innings and did not allow any runs and struck out four. Diller closed out the game in the final inning and held off all scoring.
Creighton opened up the scoring early in the top of the first with an RBI-single to the outfield making it 1-0. The Bluejays took a 4-0 advantage in the top of the third with a three-run home run to left field.
The Hoyas entered the scoring column in the bottom of the third. Amen doubled to a gap in right-center and Henning got on from a walk. While sophomore
Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda) was at the plate, both runners advanced on a passed ball and Amen eventually scored on another passed ball to put GU on the board making it 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth with two outs and bases loaded, Amen hit a grand slam over the fence in left field and gave the Hoyas a 5-4 lead. The Bluejays attempted to come back in the top of the seventh, but the Blue & Gray stepped up its defense and held off all runs to seal the victory.
