WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team will travel to James Madison University on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup against the Dukes in the quarterfinals of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Hoyas (19-15) defeated Providence on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2009 season and just the second time in program history.
In the PC victory, graduate student guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Senior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) added 19 points and eight rebounds as well as four assists as she hit three 3-pointers in the victory.
Georgetown outrebounded Providence 45-43 but shot just 26.9 percent (18 of 67) from the field. The defense forced 15 Friar turnovers on nine steals and allowed PC 34.6 percent (18 of 52) shooting from the field.
This marks Georgetown's fourth-consecutive postseason berth, and the second under Head Coach
James Howard. The furthest the Hoyas have gone is the WNIT quarterfinals before falling to Boston College 65-56 in 2009. Overall, this is the ninth appearance in the WNIT for the Blue & Gray, and the program is 7-8 all-time in the postseason tournament.
The Hoyas had an outstanding end to the regular season as the squad went 5-1 in its final six games. The Blue & Gray defeated fifth-seeded Villanova in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals after earning a first-round bye. The Hoyas defeated the Wildcats 76-67 to advance to the semifinals before falling to nationally-ranked Marquette.
GU has three players averaging double digits as All-BIG EAST honorees White and Adomako lead the team with 17.2 and 16.5 ppg, respectively. Adomako and White are averaging 8.0 and 7.6 rpg to rank first and second on the squad, White has a team-best 116 assists on the season as well as 97 steals. Adomako leads GU with 52 blocks, while junior forward
Anita Kelava (Zagreb, Croatia / Croatian National Team / Maine) also has 52 blocks on the year.
JMU (28-5) is making their fourth appearance in the WNIT Quarterfinals and first since 2013, the Dukes have only won one WNIT quarterfinal contest in 2012 over Virginia 68-59 in Harrisonburg. JMU defeated Virginia Tech 70-66 in the WNIT Third Round to advance
Kamiah Smalls led the Dukes with 16 points, while Jackie Benitez and Devon Merritt added 15 and 10, respectively
Kayla Cooper-Williams grabbed 11 rebounds. The Dukes have now won 30-straight games in the Convocation Center; which is tied for second most in program history.
Georgetown is 3-3 all-time against the Dukes, and 0-2 on the road. The teams met earlier this season as the Hoyas fell 69-57 in Harrisonburg. White led the Hoyas with 22 points, while graduate student
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) added 14. Venson tallied five assists and five rebounds, while White recorded eight boards and two steals. This is the first meeting between the teams in the postseason.
