JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite a late comeback against UNC Wilmington, the Georgetown University softball team's seven hits in the last two innings were not enough to pick up a win. The Hoyas fell to the Seahawks 6-3 and lost earlier in the day to Ball State 10-0 in the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge. With the pair of losses, the Blue & Gray hold a record of 5-17.
Sophomore
Macy Cartwright (Naples, Fla. / Naples) and freshman
Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia) led the Hoyas at the plate today with two hits apiece and freshman
Kiki Besnard (Irvine, Calif. / Northwood) recorded her sixth double of the season.
Against the Cardinals, freshman
Cassie Henning (Atlanta, Ga. / Wesleyan) went 2.2 innings in the circle and allowed 10 runs off of seven hits, walked four and retired a pair of batters. Junior
Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J. / Bishop Eustace) finished the game and struck out another pair of batters.
It didn't take long for the Cardinals to open up the scoring. Ball State doubled down the left field line and scored a runner on base to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, the Cardinals made it 6-0 off of three doubles.
Georgetown had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the second with bases loaded from three walks. Cartwright advanced the runners one more base after reaching first on a fielder's choice, but the Cardinals decided to get the out at home to prevent GU from scoring.
Ball State scored three more runs in the top of the third off of a pair of homers. The Hoyas struggled to get the bats going on the offensive end and concluded the game in five innings 10-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
In game two against UNCW, sophomore
London Diller (Sugar Land, Texas / George Ranch) pitched a complete game and allowed six runs off of eight hits and walked three while striking out five.
The Seahawks took a 4-0 lead within the first six innings while the Hoyas struggled to get the bats going on the offensive end. Georgetown put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a hit from Forshey down the middle, scoring Cartwright from third base.
A two-run homer in the top of the seventh put the Seahawks up by two, but a late rally by the Blue & Gray in the last inning tallied a pair of runs for GU and forced UNCW to making a pitching change. Senior
Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md. / Northern) started it off for the Hoyas with a shot to right field and Besnard followed up after with a double to left and scored pinch runner
Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove), 6-2. Senior
Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough) flew out to left field, but Besnard advanced on the throw to make it 6-3. With bases loaded and two outs, Forshey grounded out to first base and ended the game despite a tough comeback from the Hoyas.
The Blue & Gray will finish out the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge on Sunday at 9 a.m. with its final matchup against Charleston Southern. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
