CHICAGO – The Georgetown University women's basketball team has arrived in Chicago for the 2019 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament, presented by the Jeep Brand. The fourth-seeded Hoyas (15-14, 9-9 BIG EAST) will take on the No. 5 seed Villanova University Wildcats (18-11, 9-9 BIG EAST) in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET at Wintrust Arena. The Hoyas earned a first-round bye in the tournament and ended the regular season on a four-game win streak to secure the No. 4 seed.
On Wednesday,
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) and
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) both earned BIG EAST Conference awards when the league announced its postseason honorees. White was named to the first team, while Adomako was a second team honoree. They are now two of just four players in program history to earn four career All-BIG EAST awards joining WNBA All-Stars Rebekkah Brunson and Sugar Rodgers.
White finished her BIG EAST regular season career ranked among the all-time leaders in scoring (10th, 1,175 points), field goals made (17th, 420), field goals attempted (4th, 1,057) and steals (3rd, 201). Overall, she is among the NCAA active career leaders in steals (4th, 342) as well as the No. 2 overall points leader (1,939) and holds the program's record for career steals (342).
White is currently leading the Hoyas in scoring with 16.0 ppg and is second in rebounds with 7.4 rpg. Along with her 79 steals, she is leading the team in assists with 93. White was a Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree and was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on December 31 and February 25 to go along with two nods to the honor roll.
Adomako had an impressive comeback season after missing all of 2017-18, posting the best season of her career in terms of scoring and rebounding. In BIG EAST play, Adomako averaged 17.9 ppg and 8.6 rpg to rank third and fifth in the league, respectively. The graduate student managed seven double-doubles this season and also leads the conference in blocks with 1.9 per game. She was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on February 4 and earned four nods to the weekly honor roll.
She is second on the team in scoring overall with 15.0 ppg and a squad-best 8.1 rpg to go along with 48 blocks and 48 steals. Her 1,672 career points rank her fourth on the all-time list and she is also among the program's top 10 in both blocks (3rd, 132) and rebounds (6th, 787).
Three Wildcats were honored for their efforts during the 2018-19 season. Junior forward Mary Gedaka was named to the BIG EAST second team, redshirt freshman Emily Esposito earned All-Freshman Team accolades and senior forward Jannah Tucker was the Co- Sportsmanship Award winner. Villanova is led in scoring by Gedaka who is averaging 14.4 points per game and junior guard Kelly Jekot with a 13.7 points per game average. Senior guard Adrianna Hahn is third on the team in scoring at 12.2 points per contest. Gedaka is also the team's top rebounder at 6.9 per contest.
The Hoyas split with the Wildcats this season winning 68-63 at home but falling in a tough 91-43 decision on the road. Adomako and White led the way in the victory combining for 53 of GU's 68 points. Adomako managed 28 points with 11 rebounds, while White had 25 points to go along with six boards and four assists. Last year, Georgetown and Villanova met in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament when VU was the No. 3 seed and the Hoyas at No. 6. Georgetown took the victory in a 63-58 win after falling in both meetings during the regular season.
Cynthia Petke was a force with tallying 24 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. White was the other Hoya in double figures with 20 points while also pulling down nine rebounds and managing three assists.
Georgetown is 15-32 all-time at the BIG EAST Tournament and 5-17 in the quarterfinals. The Hoyas are 1-1 at Wintrust Arena.
