PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - The Georgetown University baseball team only had four hits and Villanova used a three-run fifth inning to defeat the Hoyas 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Villanova Park at Plymouth. With the loss, GU moves to 9-25 on the season and 0-4 in BIG EAST play while the Wildcats improve to 9-22 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central / La Salle Institute) started on the mound and went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) fired a career-best 3.0 innings without allowing a hit while also setting a career high with five strikeouts.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) had two of Georgetown's four hits and was on base three times with a walk.
Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) and
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) had the other two hits.
The Hoyas wasted no time getting on the board as Ruedisili led off the game with a double off the center field wall. He came around to score on consecutive ground outs to give GU a quick 1-0 lead.
Burke was cruising, striking out five through the first four innings and only allowing one hit. Villanova, however, scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and three hits to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Hoyas put the tying run on base as Davis singled and McCabe drew a walk with one out. However a fly out and diving play by the shortstop ended the game as the 3-1 score stood final.
Due to inclement weather in Sunday's forecast, the two teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday to conclude their three-game series. Game one is scheduled for noon with game two set to start immediately afterward. Live stats and a video stream for both games will be available at GUHoyas.com.
