Defense Struggles as Baseball Falls at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team committed seven errors in a 17-3 loss at Navy on Tuesday evening at
Terwilliger Brothers Field. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 11-26 on the season while the Midshipmen improve to 28-12.

Anthony Redfern (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went 2.0-plus innings, allowing 12 runs, although just three were earned. Jack Weeks (Reston, Va. / Paul VI) fired two perfect innings, picking up his first two career strikeouts.

Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Conn.) had two hits and an RBI to lead the GU offense while Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) also had two hits off the bench. Michael Willis (Baltimore, Md. / Gilman) was on base twice with a double and walk.

Georgetown took a quick 1-0 lead just three batters into the game. Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when McCabe lined an RBI single into center field, giving GU an early lead.

Navy responded with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first as three errors on one play allowed three runs to score and put the Hoyas in a 3-1 deficit. The Midshipmen used a hit by pitch, walk and two-run single to extend their lead to 5-1 in the second inning.

Four more Georgetown errors led to seven runs in the bottom of the third as Navy took a commanding 12-1 advantage.

Yareb Martinez (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) led off the top of the fifth with a single and went to third on a double by Willis. AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) drove in Martinez with a sacrifice fly to deep right to make it a 13-2 score.

Navy added a run in the fourth, two more in the fifth and two in the eighth to make it 17-2.

Two dropped pop ups scored an unearned run for Georgetown in the top of the ninth, providing the final score.

The Hoyas will have its bye from BIG EAST play this weekend, welcoming Rider to Shirley Povich Field for a two-day, three-game series next weekend. The teams will open the series at 6 p.m. on Friday before playing a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
