WASHINGTON – Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central / La Salle Institute) struck out a career-high 12 batters and the Georgetown University baseball team defeated St. John's 4-3 on Friday night at Shirley Povich Field in a BIG EAST Conference game. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 14-27 overall and 3-4 in BIG EAST play while the Red Storm drop to 23-15 on the season and 5-5 in conference action.
Burke started on the mound and fired 7.0 strong innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk. He struck out the first three batters of the game and had a strikeout in each inning, including four different innings with multiple strikeouts.
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emory Weiner) did not allow a hit in 2.0 innings of relief, striking out two for his sixth save of the season.
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) led the Hoya offense with two hits and an RBI and was on base three times with a hit by pitch.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Conn.) homered and scored two runs.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]),
Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) and
Alex Gamache (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest Academy) were all on base twice.
McCabe put the Hoyas on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, lining a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run to give GU a 1-0 lead.
Georgetown extended its lead to 4-0 with three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A single and walk put two runners on with two out. McCabe lined one out to right field that went off the right fielder's glove, allowing both runners to score and sending McCabe all the way to third. Achecar followed with an RBI single to push McCabe across the plate to make it a 4-0 game.
St. John's scored two runs in the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3. The Red Storm got the tying run to second base in the ninth inning, but Grzebinski sealed the win with his second strikeout.
