No. 19/17 Hoyas Defeat St. John’s 14-10 to Clinch BIG EAST Championship Berth

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team defeated visiting St. John's 14-10 on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale, clinching the second overall seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep. The No. 19/17 Hoyas finished the regular season 11-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Lucas Wittenberg (Kennesaw, Ga. / Harrison / Mercer) led the Hoyas with three goals and three assists for six points while Robert Clark (Cooksville, Md. / McDonogh) had a team-high four goals with an assist for five points. Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) added a hat trick and Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) chipped in two goals and an assist.

Austin McDonald (Olney, Md. / Georgetown Prep) and James Reilly (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) both had lone goals while Dylan Watson (Guelph, Ontario / The Hill Academy) was credited with an assist.

Defensively, Owen McElroy (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood / Avon Old Farms) picked up his 10th win of the season in goal behind a 14-save performance. The Hoyas tallied nine caused turnovers on the day with Patrick Aslanian (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) forcing three and Alex Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y. / Ward Melville) added a pair. Gibson Smith (Pelham, N.Y. / Pelham Memorial) collected 12 ground balls on the day while five other Hoyas had at least four. As a team, the Blue & Gray hauled in 54 ground balls, the most in a game since 2006.

At the 'X', Reilly continued to impress after winning 15 of 25 (.600) faceoff attempts.

Georgetown looked to have the game in hand early, netting three goals in the opening frame and holding the Red Storm scoreless in the first quarter. An early goal directly off the faceoff to start the second period put SJU on the board, but the Blue & Gray responded with three of the next four goals to take a 6-2 lead going into halftime.

St. John's (4-10, 0-5 BIG EAST) began to mount a comeback after the break, scoring the first two goals of the second half to cut the GU lead to 6-4. Georgetown responded with a pair of goals from Clark and Reilly, coming just 12 second apart, to retake a four-goal advantage up 8-4. The Johnnies flipped the Hoya script from the second half stanza and scored three of the final four goals of the third quarter to make it a 9-7 Georgetown lead going into the final 15 minutes.

With neither team scoring for nearly half of the final frame, St. John's cut their deficit to one at 9-8 at the 7:54 mark. The Hoyas answered with back-to-back goals to lead 11-8, but the Red Storm once again made it a one-score game with two goals including a man-up tally with 4:28 to play. Carraway netted his second of the game with 3:03 remaining to give the Blue & Gray some breathing room while Clark closed things out with two goals in the final 1:43 to seal the 14-10 victory for the Hoyas.

Joe Madsen led St. John's with five goals. Brody Agres had 15 saves in the loss.
