BALTIMORE – Georgetown University senior
Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) became just the second player in men's lacrosse program history to amass 200 career points as the Hoyas dropped a 16-14 decision on the road at No. 2/2 Loyola on Tuesday night. Bucaro joins recent Georgetown Hall of Fame inductee Greg McCavera (C'99) in the exclusive club.
In addition, junior
Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) scored his 100th career goal in the game. He is just the ninth Hoya to reach the milestone.
Carraway led the Hoyas (8-4) with five goals and an assist while Bucaro added three goals and an assist.
Massimo Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y. / IMG Academy) tallied five points with two goals and three assists,
Dylan Watson (Guelph, Ontario / The Hill Academy) had two goals and both
Lucas Wittenberg (Kennesaw, Ga. / Harrison / Mercer) and
Patrick Aslanian (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) tallied lone goals as well.
Robert Clark (Cooksville, Md. / McDonogh) notched two assists while
Austin McDonald (Olney, Md. / Georgetown Prep) and
Tucker Gillman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side / Avon Old Farms) had one apiece.
Defensively,
Owen McElroy (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood / Avon Old Farms) collected 15 saves between the pipes and added five ground balls.
James Reilly (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) led the Blue & Gray with seven ground balls and
Joe LiCalzi (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) had two caused turnovers.
Georgetown took the early advantage, jumping to a 2-0 lead behind goals from Wittenberg and Bucaro. The Hoyas held Loyola (9-2) scoreless until the 8:20 mark before the Greyhounds rallied off three-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead. A Bucci goal knotted things back up at 3-3 with 3:09 to play, but Loyola responded with back-to-back goals to close out the frame with a 5-3 lead.
In the second, Carraway found the back of the net first to cut the deficit to one, down 5-4, but Loyola went on to score five of the next six goals to post a 10-5 advantage. Bucaro scored his 200th point on a goal with 2:20 remaining in the half but was matched by the 'Hounds with just 22 seconds remaining to make it an 11-6 halftime score.
Georgetown's offense came alive in the third period as it outscored its hosts 5-3 in the frame. Bucaro and Carraway combined for the first three goals of the quarter to make it an 11-9 game before the Greyhounds scored three of the next four goals to lead 14-10. Undeterred, the Blue & Gray closed out the stanza with Aslanian's goal with just three ticks remaining on the clock.
In the fourth, the Hoyas would pull within one, down 14-13, behind goals from Watson and Carraway. Carraway's first score in the final frame was his milestone 100th. A Loyola goal with 3:39 remaining gave the 'Hounds a 15-13 lead but Carraway netted his fifth goal just 47 seconds later to make it a one-goal game once again. Both teams had their chances down the stretch, but Loyola managed a late man-up goal with 23 seconds left to seal the victory.
Aidan Olmstead led Loyola with eight points (2G, 6A) while Kevin Lindley had seven points (6G, 1A). Jacob Stover collected 16 saves in goal for the win.
Georgetown returns home to face No. 16/14 Villanova on Sunday, April 14 in BIG EAST action.
