WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team hit two late home runs late to overcome a 3-0 deficit and defeat UMBC 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 20-33 overall, while the Retrievers fall to 21-30 on the season.
Anthony Redfern (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.
Jack Weeks (Reston, Va. / Paul VI) and
Carter Bosch (McLean, Va. / Potomac) each fired a scoreless inning of relief while Bosch had three strikeouts.
Angelo Tonas (Hillsborough, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) retired all four batters he faced for his second career win.
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) and
AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) led the offense with a home run and two hits apiece.
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) had two hits and
Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) was on base twice with a pair of walks.
UMBC manufactured a run in the top of the fourth inning – with a double, fly out and RBI ground out - to take a 1-0 lead. The Retrievers extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
Ruedisili quickly tied the game back up in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run blast over the right fence, scoring
Alex Rosen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) who had singled and doubled, respectively.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth inning when Lotsis led off with a solo home run, sneaking his fourth homer of the season inside the right field foul pole to give the Hoyas a 4-3 lead.
Lamon came on in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side in order to earn his second save of the season.
The Hoyas will close out the regular season with a three-game BIG EAST series this weekend, Thursday - Saturday, welcoming Butler to Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is in Thursday's series opener is set for 7 p.m. while Friday's game will start at 6 p.m. and Saturday's finale is scheduled for noon.
Notes – Ruedisili's 12 home runs on the season are the most by a Hoya since Sean Lamont also had 12 in 2008 … Achecar's double in the seventh inning was Georgetown's 100th double of the season marking the first time the Hoyas have reached the mark since 2012.
