Women’s Golf Enjoying Strong Summer on the Links

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's golf team will arrive back on campus later this month and open the 2019-20 season in late September. This summer, GU's four incoming freshmen have be gearing up for their first season on the Hilltop.
 
Lauren May (Austin, Texas / Westlake) has played in three tournaments this summer, registering a pair of top-10 finishes. She turned in a sixth-place finish in a 48-player field at the Circle K Junior Championship hosted by Otter Creek in Columbus, Indiana. May also tied for sixth out of 88 golfers at the US Woman's Amateur Sectional in Dayton, Ohio, carding a round of 74. At the 2019 AJGA Judie Oppenheimer Memorial Junior, May tied for sixth with a three-round score of 220.
 
Following the Judie Oppenheimer Memorial Junior, May was the recipient of the Judie Oppenheimer Memorial Award for the second-consecutive year. The award is given to a single player in the field who best exemplifies sportsmanship, strong character and passion for golf.
 
Esther Park (Wilmington, Del. / Charter School of Wilmington) competed last month in the 44th Girls Junior PGA Championship in Hartford, Connecticut where she just missed the cut after carding a 76 and 77 in the first two rounds. She qualified for the championship with a runner-up finish at the 2019 Philadelphia Girls Junior PGA Championship in June with an even-par 71. Park was also invited to participate in the Women's Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club in June. She tied for 38th overall with a 15-over par 231.
 
Dana Choi (Los Angeles, Calif. / University) has been training at IMG Academy in Florida all summer. She has been practicing with elite junior and college players while getting ready for her first collegiate season.

Elena Zheng (Fuzhou, Fujian, China / Fuzhou No. 8) has been playing on the China Amateur circuit this summer, with the highlight coming with an individual win at the China Amateur Open in Beijing in May. She claimed medalist honors with a three-round score of 216 (72-73-71). Zheng also posted top-10 finishes at the China Amateur Open in Guangdong (6th), the China Amateur Tournament in Hainan (7th), the China Amateur Tournament in Anhui (9th) and the China Amateur Open in Shanghai (10th). 

The Hoyas finished second at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Island Golf Club in Callawassie, South Carolina. As a team, Georgetown placed among the top 10 in seven of its 10 tournaments on the season, highlighted by a team victory at the 2019 Hoya Invitational.
