Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 13 Georgetown Downs Syracuse 3-1 in Season Opener

WASHINGTON –  The No. 13 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a big second half to secure a 3-1 victory over the Syracuse University Orange Friday afternoon at Shaw Field in the season opener for both squads.  The Hoyas scored all three goals in the second half to pick up the victory and improve to 1-0 on the young season.

How it Happened
  • The first goal came in the 48th minute as senior Dylan Nealis sent a ball to transfer Paul Rothrock.  The junior pulled keeper Christian Miesch out and hit junior Derek Dodson for the goal on the open net
  • Two minutes later Syracuse equalized on a penalty kick
  • In the 74th minute, senior JB Fischer knocked in the game winner at the near post off of a corner kick from Zach Riviere
  • Freshman Dante Polvara added the insurance goal in the 75th minute on the assist from graduate student Ethan Lochner

Sounds of the Game
  • "It was a slow hot day, but this is part of what we need to manage in the month of August.  We had a lot of guys coming on who came on and did a really good job to see the game out.  We have a really unique team this year in that we have a really great group of freshmen and we don't need any of them to be playing so they can be injected as needed when they're ready.  It was great to see a lot of guys get on and contribute today." – Head Coach Brian Wiese

Of Note
  • The Hoyas had a number of chances in the first half hitting the post three times.  Jacob Montes and Riviere had golden opportunities stopped by the goal, and Miesch came up with a big time save
  • GU outshot Syracuse 16-15, and had six shots on goal to the Orange's five
  • Syracuse was awarded eight corner kicks to GU's five
  • Goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis picked up his first win of the season with four saves in the game
