Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Georgetown Falls Short 1-0 Against Appalachian State

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University field hockey team suffered its first loss of  the year in a 1-0 nailbiter against the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field. The Hoyas went back and forth with the Mountaineers but were unable to tie things up after falling behind 1-0 early in the third quarter. Junior Ali Cronin led the Hoyas with three shots, all on target, but GU could not find the back of the cage on 10 total shots.

"App State came to play and showed some great speed and skill," said Head Coach Christy Longacre. "We couldn't figure it out today, but will use this game as a learning experience that we need to show up each and everyday."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hoyas kept the Mountaineers scoreless in the first half

  • Appalachian State responded with an early goal to begin the third quarter by Megan Smart

  • Senior Lindsay Getz quickly tried to put the Hoyas on the board on the following possession but her shot went just right of the cage

  • Ali Cronin got a good look at goal from inside the arc that was saved

  • Cronin followed up her first shot with a second shot attempt that was saved by Appalachian State's Rachel Gaines

OF NOTE

  • Georgetown attempted 10 shots to the Mountaineer's 11.

  • Seven of the 10 shots from the Hoyas were on target.

  • The Hoyas and Mountaineers split penalty corner totals at eight each

  • Hoyas goalkeeper Ciara Weets had five saves, making multiple fast-break stops
