Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5 Hoyas Defeat Huskies 4-1

WASHINGTON –  The No. 5 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a big second half to down the UConn Huskies 4-1 on Saturday at Shaw Field.  With the win, the Hoyas improved to 5-0 on the season while UConn moved to 2-3 on the year.

Sounds of the Game
  • "We haven't really played a full 90 minutes yet, in all of our games we've had these stretches where we allowed the opponent to dictate the flow of play and, to UConn's credit, I thought in the second half they were really good.  The challenge for our guys is can we find 90 minutes to grind a proper performance out. But this team continues to have players that can solve goals for you.  We have guys that are very capable of taking a scenario and solving it and today is a good example." – Head Coach Brian Wiese.
How it Happened
  • UConn opened the game with a shot from Robin Lapert that hit the crossbar.
  • A setpiece set up the first goal of the game as junior Paul Rothrock sent it in to senior Dylan Nealis who put the ball in a scramble in front of the net.  Freshman Dante Polvara managed to get it past Gianluca Catalano to make it 1-0 in the 11th minute.
  • The Hoyas had chances as the game went on as junior Derek Dodson's shot was saved by Catalano and Nealis had a header hit the post.  Freshman Will Sands shot into the empty net, but it was stopped by the Husky backline to keep it 1-0.
  • In the 38th minute, junior Jack Beer dribbled through traffic and hit a left foot from outside the box to the far post to make it 2-0.
  • UConn answered early in the second as a goal from Felix Metzler in the 47th minute made it a one-goal contest.
  • Rothrock had a chance midway through the second half that hit the post as GU searched for the insurance goal.
  • The goal came in the 68th minute as junior Jacob Montes bent in a shot from the left side to the far corner and Catalano had no chance of saving it to put a third one on the scoreboard for the Hoyas.
  • The final goal of the game was a long pass from junior Foster McCune who passed it to Nealis in the corner.  He found Dodson in the center of the box who buried it to make the final 4-1.
Of Note
  • Georgetown has scored nine goals over the last two games.
  • Four different players scored for the Blue & Gray on Saturday, none of those players scored in the 5-1 win at UCLA on Monday.
  • The Hoyas outshot the Huskies 23-7.
  • GU took seven corner kicks to UConn's three.
  • Sophomore Giannis Nikopolidis took the win in the net with one save to his credit.
