Hoyas Down Villanova in Conference Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University field hockey team is off to a 1-0 start in the BIG EAST conference after Friday's 3-2 win over rival Villanova (3-2) at Cooper Field. Senior's Lindsay Getz and Michaela Bruno each had quick first quarter scores to give Georgetown the early momentum. The Hoyas never looked back, as they were able to pick up win number four on the season to improve to (4-3) overall.

"The start of conference play is always exciting," said Christy Longacre. "We had a great week of practice, a good walkthrough this morning and performed well together as a team. Our preparation and focus this week carried over into our performance. Villanova is a solid team with some really talented players. We made some mistakes that they capitalized on, but our group was resilient today and we figured out a way to finish as a team."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • GU's Getz found the back of the cage after 50 seconds of play for her fourth goal of the season.

  • Bruno scored on the following Georgetown possession to put Hoyas up 2-0.

  • Junior forward Cami Osborne fired a hot shot from far left that hit the post.

  • Villanova senior forward Abby Siana backed into a GU defender and scored on a turnaround shot to cut the Georgetown lead to 2-1.

  • Osborne capitalized on her second shot attempt, scoring on a penalty corner from junior Ali Cronin.

  • The Wildcat's junior forward Emily Clarke scored in the fourth quarter cutting GU lead back to one.

OF NOTE

  • GU attempted five of its six shots in the first quarter.

  • The Wildcats and the Hoyas were split even in shots attempted on the day with six.

  • Georgetown attempted seven penalty corners to Villanova's five.
