WASHINGTON – The No. 12 Georgetown women's soccer team wrapped up its nonconference play this season with a 7-0 win over the Ohio Bobcats at Shaw Field. The Hoyas scored five of its seven goals in the first half and moved on to 6-2-1 on the season while Ohio fell to 5-3-0.
COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
This was a good game for our team. We came out with the right attitude. These are tricky games and we just came off of a big win against West Virginia. With this being our last nonconference game and a Friday afternoon, it's very easy to just take one eye off the ball. We came off really strong in the first half and did all the things we wanted to do. The big challenge in the second half was to make sure we made the same effort we did in the first. I knew it was unlikely to score another five goals in the second half, but I was hoping we could keep the same intensity because we have to be able to put together two similar halves, which is what we did.
We've got to be careful about giving our players much needed rest before our next game. Marquette is always a tough team to beat. We've had plenty of years against Marquette where we came up just short. The first conference game always has the most juice, so we just have to be ready for it.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Charlie Kern started the scoring early for GU in the fifth minute off of a corner kick taken by sophomore Boo Jackson.
- In the 13th minute, sophomore Jenna Royson was found off of a double assist inside the six-yard box. The ball started with freshman Julia Leas and then graduate student Amanda Carolan before it got to Royson.
- Less than two minutes later, Royson took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, which was deflected by a Bobcat who knocked it into the back of the net and gave GU a 3-0 advantage.
- From the right wing, sophomore Caitlin Moon connected with Carolan inside the six-yard box and scored the fourth-straight goal for the Blue & Gray.
- Just before the end of the first half, senior Sarah Trissel found the back of the net off of a powerful throw in by junior Jenna Menta. Menta aimed toward senior Meaghan Nally, who headed her assist toward Trissel and took a 5-0 lead before heading into the second half.
- Senior Paula Germino-Watnick scored both goals for the Hoyas in the second half. She recorded her first one in the 51st minute after connecting with Carolan in the middle of the box. The second goal occurred in the 65th minute as she used her quick feet to scramble past a defender and knocked it in the back of the net unassisted.
OF NOTE
- Germino-Watnick and Carolan led the Hoyas with four points on the day apiece.
- Carolan's goal bumped her up to the No. 6 spot on the all-time list at Georgetown with 28 career goals.
- Trissel's goal was her first of the season and second career goal. Kern's goal was her first-ever goal for the Hoyas.
- This is the third-straight game that Royson has scored a goal in.
- GU outshot Ohio 16-4, allowing the Bobcats to take just one shot in the first half. The Blue & Gray took seven corners to Ohio's one.
- Freshman Anna Leat and junior Alyssa Navarrete split goal time. Leat made one save in the first half and Navarrete tallied two in the second.
