WASHINGTON – The No. 2 Georgetown University men's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory over the Providence College Friars on Saturday at Shaw Field in BIG EAST Conference action. Sounds of the Game
- "We were flat today, but a lot of credit has to go to Providence they were really good and executed what they were trying to do. They have one of the best midfield groups in the league and Providence is one of the better teams we've played all year so it's a great result to get three points in the league against a team of that caliber. We'll take it, get some rest and focus on DePaul moving forward." – Head Coach Brian Wiese.
How it Happened
- Providence had momentum early as Rio Hope-Gund and the GU defense came up with a pair of solid stops to keep it scoreless.
- The Hoyas were dangerous on a restart midway through the first as Daniel Wu sent in a header and PC keeper Austin Aviza came up with a big save.
- In the 48th minute, freshman Will Sands was taken down in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Junior captain Derek Dodson lined up and buried it to give the Hoyas the 1-0 lead.
- Minutes later, Sands had a chance again that Aviza was forced to save as the Blue & Gray controlled possession.
- The Hoyas added a second goal in the 75th minute as junior Jack Beer passed a long diagonal ball to Dodson in the corner. He crossed it in front of the goal and junior Foster McCune had a perfect finish to make it 2-0.
- Providence answered in the 80th minute with a goal from Andrew Chisholm.
- The Friars pressured for the remainder of the game, but the Blue & Gray was able to hold on for the win.
Of Note
- Georgetown was outshot 11-5 overall, but held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Hoyas took three corner kicks to Providence's two.
- Freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero was awarded the win the net with two saves in the game.
