WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team ran for 272 yards and scored the most points in a game since 2011 as the Hoyas defeated Marist 43-3 on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. It was GU's home opener as the Blue & Gray moved to 1-1 on the season while the Red Foxes fell to 0-1.
KEY STATS
- The Hoyas totaled 424 total yards to Marist's 244 and outgained the Red Foxes 272-52 on the ground.
- The GU defense forced four turnovers, two fumbles and two interceptions.
- Gunther Johnson finished 9-of-14 passing for 77 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 68 yards and two touchdowns.
- Herman Moultrie III rushed 20 times for 104 yards and a score.
- Joshua Tomas scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving.
- Michael Dereus had two catches for 78 yards and his third touchdown of the season.
- Delano Salgado had an interception and recovered a fumble.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgetown took a 7-0 lead on its second possession, driving 49 yards on seven plays. Johnson capped the drive with a 17-yard touchdown run.
- Marist connected on a 36-yard field goal on its first drive of the second quarter.
- The Hoyas answered right back with a 77-yard drive in under four minutes, scoring on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Brunell to Tomas. Khristian Tate ran in the 2-point conversion to give GU a 15-3 lead.
- Ahmad Wilson forced a fumble that Marquis Parris recovered, giving the Hoyas a short field. Tomas scored on a 1-yard run with seven seconds left in the first half to take a 22-3 lead at the midway point.
- Johnson ran for his second touchdown to open the second half, a 32-yard run, before Moultrie rushed for 35 yards on the next drive before scoring from the 1-yard line to make it 36-3 midway through the third quarter.
- Following a Salgado interception, Johnson found Dereus for a 30-yard touchdown reception to complete the scoring.
OF NOTE
- The 43 points is the most in a game since the Hoyas scored 52 on Sept. 24, 2011 at Marist.
- The 272 rushing yards are the most in a game by a Georgetown team since Sept. 1, 2012 at Davidson.
- Freshman Joshua Stakely made his debut and rushed 10 times for 44 yards.
