Georgetown Set for Sunday Night Matchup with St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team closes out its season-opening six-game homestand on Sunday night, hosting St. John's in a BIG EAST matchup at McDonough Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The St. John's-Georgetown matchup was formed because of COVID issues involving Connecticut, the original opponent.

  • Sunday's game can be seen live on FS1 with Steve Buckhantz calling the play-by-play and Donny Marshall providing analysis.
  • The game can be heard locally on 106.7 The Fan as well as SiriusXM 387 and Radio.com with Rich Chvotkin in his 47th season on the call.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • In Friday's BIG EAST opener, Georgetown hung tight with No. 9/6 Villanova, but ultimately dropped a 76-63 decision at McDonough Arena.
  • Jamorko Pickett led the Hoyas with his second-consecutive double-double, finishing with team highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Qudus Wahab and Jahvon Blair were both also in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Dante Harris scored a career-high nine points off the bench.
  • Through five games, Blair leads the Hoyas in scoring with 18.4 ppg, while Pickett is averaging 14.6 ppg and pulling down a league-leading 10.0 rpg. 
  • Wahab is also in double figures with 11.2 ppg and is also second with an average of 7.4 rpg. Jalen Harris is pacing the offense with 5.2 apg.
  • The Hoyas lead the BIG EAST in rebounding (45.8 rpg) and are second in rebounding margin (+9.4).

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
  • St. John's, which enters Sunday's matchup with a 5-2 overall record, lost 77-68 in its conference opener on Friday at Seton Hall.
  • The Red Storm average 80.3 ppg and allowing a league-worst 75.6 ppg to opponents. SJU leads the BIG EAST with 11.7 steals per game and 19.7 forced turnovers per game.
  • Julian Champagnie leads the team in both scoring (22.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg).
  • Vince Cole (13.3 ppg) and Greg Williams Jr. (12.0 ppg) are also in double figures, while Posh Alexander is averaging 4.3 apg.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Sunday will be the 117th all-time meeting between the storied BIG EAST rivals with the Red Storm holding a slim 60-56 series advantage.
  • Georgetown swept the regular season series last year, winning 87-66 at Capital One Arena in January before coming out on top 73-72 at Madison Square Garden in February. The Red Storm defeated the Hoyas in the BIG EAST Tournament.
  • Pickett averaged 13.7 points and 9.7 rpg in the three matchups last season, including a pair of double-doubles.
  • Blair averaged 12.0 ppg against the Red Storm, going for 23 points in the February win behind five 3-pointers.
  • Patrick Ewing is 5-3 in his coaching career against St. John's after going 8-4 versus the Red Storm as a player.
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Hoyas will head out on the road for the first time this season, traveling to Queens, N.Y. for a matchup against St. John's on Sunday, December 20. Tipoff at the Red Storm's Carnesecca Arena is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FS1.
