Softball Falls to Eastern Kentucky

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Georgetown University softball team fell 8-3 to Eastern Kentucky in its concluding game of the Winthrop Tournament Sunday Morning in Rock Hill, South Carolina. With the loss, GU drops to 1-9 on the young season while EKU advances to 6-2 on the season. The Hoyas went 1-4 on the weekend, defeating Holy Cross 2-1 on Friday.

Hoya Highlights
  • Senior Delaney Darden and junior Deirdre Gallo led the Hoya offense with two hits each on the day.
  • Senior Noelle Holiday and sophomore Mae Forshey each recorded home runs and Forshey brought in a pair of RBIs.
  • Forshey's home run was her first of the season and second of her career.
  • Holiday, sophomore Kiki Besnard and freshman Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza also recorded RBIs.
  • In the circle junior London Diller pitched the first 1.2 innings and gave up five earned runs off of four hits. She walked three and struck out one. Senior Katie Vannicola threw the next 1.2 innings and gave up three more runs off of three hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Cassie Henning and senior Casey Kozak were also added into the pitching rotation and did not allow any runs.

How it Happened
  • The Colonels took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with bases loaded.
  • Holiday led off the top of the second with a home run out of center field and made it a one-run game.
  • In the bottom of the second, Eastern Kentucky extended its lead to 3-1 off of a single, but a pair of homers in the next two innings would make it a 6-1 game.
  • Forshey kept the Blue & Gray in the game with a home run in the top of the fourth, but EKU managed to hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-2.
  • The Hoyas had a strong fifth inning at the plate as GU recorded four hits in the inning. With bases loaded, Besnard singled past the third basemen to score another run and forced a Colonels pitching change. Vasquez-Inzunza and Forshey both reached base on a fielders choice as the EKU defense got the outs at home to end the inning.
