MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Georgetown University softball team went 0-2 on the opening day of the Madeira Beach Tournament, falling 12-4 to South Dakota (5-7) in game one and later dropping a 2-1 decision to Columbia (2-0). With the pair of losses, GU drops to 1-11 on the season.
vs. South Dakota
How it Happened
- Georgetown opened up the scoring in the top of the first. With two outs and a full count, junior Savannah Jones hit a line drive to left field and scored sophomore Mae Forshey from third to give GU an early 1-0 lead.
- The Coyotes answered in the bottom of the inning with a grand slam to make it 4-1.
- Senior Ciara Sullivan kept the bats going in the next inning and blasted her hit out of left field for a home run, but South Dakota rallied in the bottom of the second and scored five more runs to extend its lead to 9-2.
- In the top of the third, senior Delaney Darden singled to shortstop and Forshey followed up with a two-run homer to left field.
- USD went on to score three more runs in the fourth inning and grabbed a 12-4 lead. The Hoyas struggled to come back as the teams concluded play after five innings.
Of Note
- Junior London Diller got the start in the circle and went 1.2 innings. She gave up eight runs off of four hits. Senior Katie Vannicola finished the game and allowed four more runs off of four hits.
- The Coyotes had eight hits on the day to GU's seven
- Forshey and Jones led the squad with two hits each and Forshey scored a pair of runs as well as brought in two RBIs. Sullivan and Forshey each recorded their second home run of the season.
vs. Columbia
How it Happened
- All three runs were scored in the third inning. Columbia got on the board with a hit to left field to score the runner on base. The Lions followed up with another run with the next batter who singled to second base.
- GU made it a one-run difference in the bottom of the inning with bases loaded. Senior Noelle Holiday took one for the team and was hit by a pitch to advance the runners.
- The Hoyas created several opportunities throughout the following innings to try and tie it up. Their closest chance occurred in their final at bat when Sullivan walked and Diller reached base on an error, but a double play ended the game at 2-1.
Of Note
- Sophomore Cassie Henning pitched a complete game for the Hoyas. She gave up a pair of runs off of five hits, walked one and struck out one.
- The Lions outhit the Blue & Gray 5-1. Freshman Sophia Scarangella led the Hoya offense with a hit on the day and Holiday brought in the lone run.
