Hoyas Fall to Marquette in Home Finale

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost its final home game of the 2019-20 season, dropping a 76-56 decision to the Marquette University Golden Eagles Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup.  With the loss, GU fell to 5-22 overall and 2-14 in league play while MU moved to 21-7 overall and 11-5 in the BIG EAST.

How it Happened
  • After the Golden Eagles took the early lead, back-to-back buckets from sophomore Nikola Kovacikova tied it at six.
  • Following two quick points, a trey by graduate student Brianna Jones put GU on top 9-8.
  • Marquette would once again gain the advantage as the Hoyas battled even, tying it at 18 on a 3-pointer by graduate student Taylor Barnes.
  •  In the final seconds of the first quarter, junior Tatiana Thompson threw one up trying to beat the shot clock to tie the game at 21.
  • Senior Anita Kelava's layup put GU up early in the second quarter, but Marquette came back with a 5-0 run to gain the advantage.
  • Georgetown tied it up again on another trey by Thompson as she banked in the triple from the top of the key to make it 28-28.
  • Marquette would lead by as much as eight down the stretch, but Barnes knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to make it 42-36 at the half and give Barnes her 1,000th career point.
  • The Golden Eagles came out hot hitting a pair of buckets and forcing a Hoya timeout.
  • Georgetown had opportunities, but could not get within single digits trailing 56-46 at the end of the third quarter.
  • The fourth was much of the same as GU could not get anything going eventually falling 76-56.

Of Note
  • Barnes led the way with 15 points, while Jones added 11 as the two Hoyas in double figures.
  • Kelava added four points and a squad-best six rebounds.
  • Georgetown shot 36 percent from the field hitting 23-of-63 shots while the Golden Eagles managed 56 percent hitting 29-of-52.
  • The Blue & Gray was outrebounded 39-27, but committed just nine turnovers to Marquette's 16.
