Georgetown Drops Game at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost 62-55 to the Providence College Friars Friday evening at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.  Georgetown made a late comeback but it was not enough as the Hoyas fell to 5-23 on the season and 2-15 in the BIG EAST Conference.

How it Happened
  • Graduate student Brianna Jones had the hot hand to start the game as she scored seven straight points to make it 9-7 midway through the first quarter.
  • Providence would end the stanza on a 10-0 run to make it 20-11 at the buzzer.
  • The Friars opened the scoring in the second quarter, but a jumper from Jones sparked another 7-0 run by the guard.
  • Senior Anita Kelava and sophomore Cassandra Gordon both added jumpers to complete the 11-0 run as the Hoyas tied the game at 22.
  • Providence would end the run with a bucket, but it was again Jones who evened the score at 24.
  • Over the final five minutes of the half, the momentum shifted back to the Friars who staged a 12-2 run to lead 36-26 at the break.
  • The game began to get physical in the second half and Providence moved ahead by as much as 14.
  • A layup from sophomore Shanniah Wright sparked a small run as GU cut it to nine 42-33 powered by four points from Wright.
  • An 8-1 Friar run gave Providence its largest lead to that point, but graduate student Taylor Barnes nailed a late three to make it 50-37 at the end of the third.
  • Providence controlled the fourth quarter and even a late charge from the Blue & Gray was too little, too late as GU fell 62-55.

Of Note
  • Jones led the way with a career-best 24 points and six rebounds as well as two steals.
  • Kelava managed her second double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds along with three steals.
  • Georgetown shot 33.8 percent from the field hitting 22-of-65 shots, while the Friars managed 47.1 percent hitting 24-of-51.
  • The teams tied in rebounds with 35 apiece, and GU committed 13 turnover while forcing 18 by PC.
