WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team dropped a close one to the Princeton Tigers on the opening day of the Colonial Classic, hosted by George Washington. The Hoyas fell 7-6 to the Tigers despite battling Princeton throughout the entirety of the game. With the loss, GU drops to 3-13 on the season while the Tigers improve to 2-2.
How it Happened
- The Tigers made it 1-0 early on in the top of the second with a home run out of left field.
- Georgetown responded in the bottom of the third to grab a 3-1 lead. Senior Alexa Dolby reached third base on a fielding error and freshman Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza scored her with a two-run homer. A hit, another error and an RBI single by junior Savannah Jones brought in the third run for GU.
- Princeton took back its lead in its next at bat and managed to score five runs off of three hits and an error.
- Sophomore Mae Forshey led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and Jones scored her off of an error. Shortly after, senior Delaney Darden made it a one-run game with an RBI single.
- The Tigers scored another run in the top of the seventh.
- Jones homered to left center in the Hoyas' final at bat to make it a 7-6 game. The Blue & Gray fought hard to come out on top but dropped the decision.
Of Note
- Junior London Diller got the start and went 4.0 innings in the circle. Diller allowed six runs off of five hits, walked three and struck out eight.
- Senior Katie Vannicola finished the game and gave up a run off of three hits and struck out three.
- Forshey went 3-for-3 on the day, including a double. Jones, Diller and Dolby each recorded a pair of hits.
- Jones brought in three RBIs for the Hoyas.
- Vasquez-Inzunza's home run was the first of her collegiate career.
- The Hoyas outhit the Tigers 11-8 and committed one error while Princeton made four.
